Most of us know of TCP/IP as the glue that binds the Internet. But not as many can offer a cogent description of what it is and how it works. So what is TCP/IP, really? TCP/IP is a means for networked computers to communicate with each other. It doesn't matter whether they are part of the same network or are attached to separate networks. It doesn't matter if one computer is a Cray and the other a Macintosh. TCP/IP is a platform-independent standard that bridges the gap between dissimilar computers, operating systems, and networks. It's the protocol that drives the global Internet, and it is to the Internet that TCP/IP owes much of its popularity. Understanding TCP/IP is largely a matter of understanding a collection of arcane protocols that TCP/IP hosts use to exchange information. Let's look at some of those protocols and see what makes TCP/IP tick

Thoughts on the Evolution of TCP in the Internet

OVERVIEW
Past changes to transport protocols.
Additional possible changes:
HighSpeed TCP et al.;
Additional feedback from routers?
Communication between link layers and transport?
Flow-specific state in routers?
Fundamental limitations:
Of window-based congestion control;
Of congestion control without per-flow state in routers;
Of best-effort service.
RFC 3426: General Architectural and Policy Considerations

Past history of TCP
Reno/NewReno/SACK:
Half of servers use SACK, many others use NewReno.
Almost all browsers use SACK.
DON’T use Reno in simulations or experiments!!!
Delay-based congestion control:
Vegas, FAST
TCP-Nice and TCP-LowPriority use delay-based congestion control for low priority TCP .
ECN:
Explicit instead of implicit notification.
Standardized but not deployed.

TCP/IP

introduction
In 1969, a project and implimentation was funded by the Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA), an arm of the U.S. Department of Defense.

Advanced Research Project Agency Network (ARPANET) that provided a basis for early research into networking was launched.

The conventions developed by ARPA to specify how individual computers could communicate across that network became TCP/IP.

Abstract

In a mobile ad hoc network, temporary link failures and route changes occur frequently. With the assumption that all packet losses are due to congestion, TCP performs poorly in such an environment. This paper proposes a new mechanism called TCP Adaptive RTO (TCP AR) that improves TCP performance in mobile ad hoc network s. TCP AR distinguishes routes failures from network congestion and adapts the RTO’s value to network conditions. For this purpose it relies on the estimation of the network’s throughput. Using the NS-2 simulator we compared TCP AR throughput to th ose of TCP New Reno and TCP Westwood using different scenarios which vary in nodes’ mobility and traffic load. The simulation results discussed in this paper show that TCP AR can achieve up to a 152% improvement in network throughput.

Nokia IP Telephony
IP Telephony Protocols and Architectures

Why give this talk?

Telecommunications and telephony are undergoing a radical change
The trade press is full of the news that telecommunications and telephony are undergoing a radical change
Information about the technology underlying these changes is not readily available

Agenda

Overview
Scenarios
Basic components of an IP telephony system
Standards and standards bodies
H.323 101
Decomposing gateways (more components! more protocols!)
Security (H.235)
Numbering, addressing
Wrap-up
Various breaks for questions

Caveats

Not talking much about
Mobility
Wirelessness
Multipoint/multiparty architecture
SIP deserves a lot more attention than it’s going to get today
So does the PSTN switching hierarchy

IP Telephony - What is it?

Several things, actually
Widely used end-to-end, very often with video
NetMeeting
iVisit
CU-Seeme
Increasingly popular to provide a gateway to traditional switched circuit networks
Low-cost long distance services by trunking calls over an IP network
Replace a PBX or key system with telephony on a LAN within an enterprise
“IP Centrex”
Call centers (CTI)
Screen pops
Predictive dialers
These usually use APIs and toolkits (TAPI, JTAPI, IBM CallPath)
The protocols and architectures we’re talking about today cover all of these

AN INTRODUCTION TO TCP/IP
The protocols that make intranets--and the Internet—work

ABSTRACT :-
One of the most important achievement of last decade is popularity of internet. Today internet has become part of our day to day life.TCP/IP in a broad sense can be explained as the concept on which internet works. The paper attempts to familiarize with some of the basic concepts of TCP/IP.It starts with a brief introduction of TCP/IP and provides the basics of it.It also gives a brief origin of TCP/IP and the basic function of these protocols. It also gives the structure of TCP/IP and explains how transmission of data takes place in real world network. It also gives description of some of the protocols that constitute TCP/IP.The conclusion summarizes the key points of TCP/IP.

2) INTRODUCTION :- Most of us know of TCP/IP as the glue that binds the Internet. But not as many can offer a cogent description of what it is and how it works. So what is TCP/IP, really?
TCP/IP is a means for networked computers to communicate with each other. It doesn't matter whether they are part of the same network or are attached to separate networks.
