Radial Test Feeders
n The Electric Power Utility Is an Extremely Large Enterprise
u Many systems and applications were designed to complete both business and engineering functions
u A single activity may need cooperation from many systems and applications
u Information within an individual system may be useful across the whole enterprise
The Challenges of DMS Systems
n Utility information technology (IT) environment is truly heterogeneous, with a mix of:
u Many hardware systems, many operating systems, and many application development environments
u Proprietary data models for each individual system
n A Common Data Model is the Most Fundamental Step to Build an Integration Framework
n The Electrical Distribution Needs a Common Model to Facilitate the Integration within DMS Systems
Previous Work
u Develop a Framework that Applications in the Utility Operations Environment Will be “Plug and Play”
u Common Information Model
u Control Center API’s and Inter-application Messaging
n IEC TC 57
u Working Group 13 is focused on EMS application programming interfaces
u Working Group 14 is focused on identifying and establishing requirements for standard interfaces related to DMS
Problem Statement
• The CIM was originally designed for EMS systems and is not complete for DMS systems. The CIM needs to be extended to distribution systems to facilitate the integration within DMS applications
• Data requirements by the distribution power flow is a basis for the distribution network. A common model is needed to represent these data.
• A reference model is needed to verify the correctness of the distribution CIM (after created) and to demonstrate distribution information in CIM XML is exchangeable and understandable
Tools and Software
n Microsoft Excel Data Sheet
u The Original IEEE Radial Test Feeders
n Microsoft Access Database
u The Input of the Export Tool
u The Validation Check Files
n Microsoft Visual C++
u The Export Tool and The Import Tool
n IBM’s XML for C++ Parser (XML4C)
u The Export Tool and The Import Tool
Details of The Research Work
n Distribution CIM Modeling Issues
n Topology Model, Line Model, Load Model, Voltage Regulator Model, Feeder Model
n Distribution CIM Modeling Techniques
n CIM XML Export Tool
n Validation Check
Major Distribution CIM Modeling Issues
n The Electrical distribution is an unbalanced network in nature. A single distribution device may have different attribute for each phase
n Distribution CIM needs to model multi-phase attributes
n Distribution line are modeled with more geometric and conductor information.
n Impedance representation would be more complicated
n Every distribution component is a part of a distribution Feeder
Problems We Needed to Solve
n Multi-Phase Connection
n Multi-Phase Attributes
u Voltage Regulators
u Distribution Load
n Distribution Line Model
n Feeder Model
Major Modifications and Creations
The CIM XML Export Tool
The Validation Check Method
Validation Check Results
Reviews and Feedback From Industrial Contacts

n Scott Neumann from CES International, the Modeling Group Leader of WG14
u consistent cooperation from the beginning of this research
n EPRI’s CCAPI Working Group
u A presentation at CCAPI Las Vegas Meeting, April 2001
n Kevin Jones from Stoner and Herbert Falk from SISCO
u Reviewed the proposed CIM modeling and CIM XML documents
Conclusions and Contributions
n Identified the CIM extensions and created an initial set of distribution CIM models for data requirements by the distribution power flow.
n The proposed model is capable to represent distribution network data and provide a basis for future modifications and extensions
n Proposed general data modeling methods for multi-phase attribute and whole-part relationship modeling
n Created CIM XML documents for the IEEE PES Radial Test Feeders
n Test Results and Industrial Feedback show that the proposed model is a good initial set of distribution CIM model
