ABSTRACT
After the Bhuj earthquake, seismic retrofitting of multi storey buildings ha ve received considerable attention. Most buildings have been designed to withstand gravity loads only. Therefore it is required to identify the deficiencies for seismic performance and provide suitable retrofitting. Push-over analysis is being increasingly used for this purpose. In this project and implimentation, Equivalent Static Method & Push-over analysis has been studied in detail and has been applied to assess the seismic vulnerability of a multi storey residential complex. The building taken for study is located in Zone III. The analysis was performed using SAP2000. The capacity of the building to meet the imposed demand was determined by using Capacity Spectrum Method (ATC 40). In push-over analysis, the sequence of hinge formation was studied and the building was found to be unsafe under nonlinear sta tic loading.

INTRODUCTION
GENERAL
Any structure is subjected to both static and dynamic loads. Static loads are constant with time while dynamic loads are time varying. In spite of this fact, majority of the civil engineering structures are designed with the assumption that all applied loads are static. The effects of dynamic loads are not considered since the structure is rarely subjected to dynamic conditions. The consideration of dynamic loads in analysis also makes the solution more complicated and time consuming. This feature of neglecting dynamic forces may sometimes become the cause of disaster, especially in the case of tall structures subjected to earthquakes. Figure 1.1 Flowchart for various types of loads Seismic performance is an execution of a structure's ability to sustain their due functions, such as its safety and serviceability, at and after a particular earthquake exposure. A structure is, normally, considered to be safe if it does not endanger the lives and wellbeing of those in or around it by partial or complete collapse. A structure may be considered as serviceable if it is able to fulfill its operational functions for which it was designed. Basic concepts of earthquake engineering, implemented in the major building codes, assume that a building should survive the most powerful anticipated earthquake though with partial destruction. Reinforced multi storied buildings in India were subjected a strong ground motion shake for the first time during Bhuj earthquake (January 26, 2001). It has been observed that the principal reasons for failure of the structures were soft stories, floating columns, mass irregularities, poor quality of construction material and faulty construction practices, inconsistent earthquake response, soil and foundation effect and pounding of adjacent structures. The majority of the new style of architectural designs consists of irregular shapes which in fact are more likely to fail during an earthquake. Hence, the task of analyzing existing high-rise buildings and checking them for their vulnerability during earthquakes becomes an important issue. This project and implimentation aims at the evaluation of seismic performance of a multi storied building in Calicut. According to the seismic zone map of 2002, Calicut belongs to zone III, in which the probability of earthquake occurrence is moderate. Vulnerability is commonly expressed by functions or matrices that can be obtained either by statistical studies of damaged buildings in earthquake-struck areas or by simulations using numerical and analytical models of the building structure. Since no major damaging earthquake has occurred in Calicut in recent times, vulnerability functions from observed damage patterns are not available. Therefore, a method is required that allows the evaluation of the vulnerability of existing buildings with regard to the earthquake scenario. A mathematical model of the structures has to be created for this purpose. For this project and implimentation, SAP2000 software is used to carry out the modeling and analysis. Structural analysis methods can be divided into the following five categories.
