ABSTRACT
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at net books. It is designed by Google to work with web applications and announced on July 7, 2009. Later this year we will open-source its code, and net books running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. It provides a fast, simple, and more secure computing experience for people who spend most of their time on the web. Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of net books to market next year.
The disadvantage of this method is that Chromium OS won’t be as fast as the operating system is designed to be, because it’s running in a virtual machine in other words, you won’t get to see Chrome OS’s amazing boot time or snappy responsiveness. The advantage of this method, however, is that your internet connection, keyboard, and mouse will work whether or not they’re on Google’s list of approved hardware.

Operating Systems
One kind of software that controls the overall operation of a computer
Unix, Sun Solaris
Linux: Ubuntu, Redhat, ...
Microsoft Windows
Apple Mac OS X
Google Chrome OS
One of the biggest questions that popped up when Google announced the OS was how it intended to handle?
Fast & light weight : The new Chrome OS is expected to work well with many of the company's popular software applications. It will be fast and less memory-intensive, enabling users to access the Web in a few seconds.
The new system is designed to work with ARM and x86 chips, the main chip architectures in use in the market. Microsoft has previously said it would not support PCs running on ARM chips, allowing Google an opportunity to infiltrate that segment.
Features
Speedy boot up, as fast as three seconds: A Chrome OS device will not store any applications on the device itself. The only applications it will use are those that can be run from the cloud in a browser, the Chrome browser, to be specific. One of the primary reasons for this is to speed up boot time. With no local applications and limited hardware, the device doesn't need to run through long checklist looking for devices and drivers, loading programs into resident memory and so on. It should turn on like a television, flip a switch and the within three seconds browser should be available, showing the most recent browser windows.
Security by default: The portion of the operating system needed to operate the device will reside in a read only section of memory. The rest of the operating system is integrated with the Chrome browser and, like the browser, security updates require nothing more than a reboot. Chrome OS can run multiple web applications in multiple tabs and each one is locked down from all others, so one web app can't lead to exposure in another. User data stored on the device, which is minimal, is encrypted. User data is limited to items such as user preferences. All other data will be stored in the cloud.
Google Vs Microsoft
Google Attacks on Microsoft
Google plans to attack Microsoft's core business by taking on the software giant's globally dominant Windows operating system for personal computers.
Google Chrome Operating System, the new software will be in netbooks in the second half of 2010.
Microsoft OS Share on PC ~90% PCs using Microsoft’s OS Google is planning to capture Microsoft Share of 90%
A surprising way to support Microsoft Offic
Chrome OS would handle Office documents via Microsoft Office Live, the free web app version of Office available to Windows Live users. If a user clicks on an .xls document, Chrome launches Excel via the browser in Office Live.
Google Chrome OS Cost
Support for both x86 and ARM architectures:
Google promises that it will be writing native code for both popular net book CPUs.
The application menu
As new web applications come online tweaked for Chrome OS, Chrome OS will showcase them on a permanent tab it now calls the application menu. This will help users find new applications. Developers with new apps will find this an easier method to showcase them, too. Any web application that runs in a standards compliant browser should work on a Chrome OS device. But Chrome OS is focused on supporting new protocols such as HTML 5, which, among other improvements, natively supports rich media.

GOOGLE CHROME OS

.doc   GOOGLE OS.doc (Size: 125 KB / Downloads: 76)

INDRODUCTION TO GOOGLE CHROME OS
it's been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we're announcing a new project and implimentation that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.

Commercial hardware: Chromebooks
Main article: Chromebook
Google initially named several development partners working on hardware for the operating system, with others named in the press, including Acer, Adobe, Asus, Freescale, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Toshiba,[37] Intel,[38] Samsung,[39][40] and Dell.[41]

Relationship to Android
Google's successive introduction of the popular Android[51] and Google Chrome OS has put the company behind two open source, client-based operating systems. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer accused Google of not being able to make up its mind.[52] Google has suggested that the two operating systems address different markets, mobile and personal computing, which remain distinct despite the growing convergence of the devices. Co-founder Sergey Brin suggested that the two systems "will likely converge over time

GOOGLE CHROME OS

.doc   google chrome report 2.doc (Size: 1,020.5 KB / Downloads: 48)

What is Google Chrome OS?
Google Chrome OS is an upcoming Linux-based, open source operating system designed by Google to work exclusively with web applications. Announced on July 7, 2009, Chrome OS is set to have a publicly available stable release during the second half of 2010.
Chrome OS will not be available as a download to run and install. Instead, the operating system will only ship on specific hardware from Google's manufacturing partners. The user interface takes a minimalist approach, resembling that of the Chrome web browser.

What is Cloud Computing?
Cloud Computing is Internet-based computing, whereby shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on demand, like the electricity grid.
Cloud computing is a paradigm shift following the shift from mainframe to client–server in the early 1980s. Details are abstracted from the users, who no longer have need for expertise in, or control over, the technology infrastructure "in the cloud" that supports them.

What is a Netbook?
Netbooks (sometimes also called mini notebooks or ultra portables) are a branch of subnotebooks, a rapidly evolving category of small, lightweight, and inexpensive laptop computers suited for general computing and accessing Web-based applications; they are often marketed as "companion devices", i.e

Software Architecture
Chromium OS consists of three major components:
• The Chromium-based browser and the window manager
• System-level software and user-land services: the kernel, drivers, connection manager, and so on
• Firmware

System-level and user-land software
From here we bring in the Linux kernel, drivers, and user-land daemons. Our kernel is mostly stock except for a handful of patches that we pull in to improve boot performance. On the user-land side of things we have streamlined the init process so that we're only running services that are critical.

Printing
to Google plans to create a service called Google Cloud Print, which will help any application on any device to print on any printer. This method of printing does not require any drivers and therefore will be suitable for printing from Google Chrome OS. Mike Jazayeri, Google group product manager, wrote that the service was prompted by a paradox inherent in an operating system designed expressly for cloud computing.

CONCLUSION
Having said that all, the big question that still stands unanswered is, who will win this war? (I can hear someone saying its Chrome, well not yet, it’s a crazy world out there and anything can happen over a cup of coffee). But there is no answer for this. All browsers are unique in their own way. But with the release of Firefox 4 and Chrome 9 already, users are in a dilemma on which one to make as their default browser.
