Hindustan Aircraft Limited was promoted by Late Shri Walchand & Hirachand in Dec. 1940 in association with the government of Mysore as a private limited company with its registered office at Bangalore and paid up capital of Rs.40 Lac. After a few months the government of India joined it as share holder in June 1942 and took over the management, having bought the share of private enterprises.

Entrusted the company with progressive development in aircraft industry in India expanding its activities to the license manufacture of trainer aircraft of military and civil use. The companies also started manufacture rail coaches in 1947.
In 1948, with the impetus given by the then prime minister of India Shri Jawaharlal Nehru. The policy for manufacture as well design and development of aircraft was revived by the G.O.I. In 1951 the company control was transferred to the ministry of defence.
