INFRARED SWITCHING OF ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES USING EMBEDDED CONTROLLER

Introduction & Overview

It is an embedded controller circuit to switch on and off electrical appliances.
This system will use normal TV remote control to send the control signal
The TV remote control sends different control signals as per the key pressed.
This control can be used for decoding and select some of the out pin of the micro controller.


FUNCTION
The TV remote control sends control signals in the form of IR rays to the receiving unit.
The receiving unit receives the IR signals.
The IR signal will be converted into digital signal with the help of an IR receiver.
The received signals are decoded by the micro controller and changes its output with respect to the code received.
Remote transmitter
The remote transmitter used in this project and implimentation is a TV remote control used for Phillips TVs.
It sends the control signals, which are in RC5 protocol modulated on a 40khz carrier signal.

MICRO CONTROLLER
The 89C2051 micro controller is used in this project and implimentation.
It is in the family of Intel 8051. It is a CISC type processor and having 256 instructions. It has a 16-bit timer

and UART.
The controller receives the signals, which are in RC5 protocol. It decodes the control signals and changes the port

status.



Why 89C2051?
Microcontrollers these days are silent workers in many apparatus, ranging from the washing machine to the video

recorder.
Nearly all of these controllers are mask programmed and therefore are of very little use for applications that

require the programs to be changed during the course of execution.
The 89C2051, an 8 bit single chip microcontroller, 64K program memory address space, 64K data memory address space,

128 bytes of on chip RAM ,2K Bytes of Reprogrammable Flash Memory, two 16 bit timers/counters and an extensive

interrupt structure.

MICRO CONTROLLER
Pin Description Of 89C2051
VCC: Supply voltage.
GND: Ground

REMOTE RECEIVING UNIT
The remote receiving unit receives the IR signals coming from the TV remote control unit.
These signals are converted into electrical signals by the help of IR receiver.
The TV remote control sends the control signals with RC5 protocol.
The micro controller receives the signals and it decodes the control signals.
As per the control signals it changes the states of its port terminals.


IR RECEIVER
The IR sensor will receive the Infra Red signals send by the TV remote control.
The control signals are modulated on 40khz signal in order to avoid external light.
The sensor converts the IR signal into electrical signals with the help of photo diode and amplifies it.
It also includes the filter circuit to demodulate the 40khz carrier signal.
The sensor inverts the signals.

IR RECEIVER
A logical 1 indicates the presence of 40-kHz modulated IR, and a 0 indicates its Absence.
The 40-kHz modulation is used to filter out natural forms of IR present from sources such as sunlight or office

florescent lights.
The TSOP17 is a miniaturized receiver for infrared remote control systems.
PIN diode and preamplifier are assembled on lead frame, the epoxy package is designed as IR filter.
The demodulated output signal can directly be decoded by a microprocessor.


POWER SUPPLY
Power supply block consists of following units:
Center tapped step down transformer.
Full wave rectifier circuit.
Input filter.
Voltage regulators.
Output filter.
Indicator unit.

Center tapped step down transformer
The center-tapped step-down transformer is used to step down the supply voltage of 230v ac from mains to lower

values, as the various ICâ„¢s used in this project and implimentation require reduced voltages.
The outputs from the secondary coil which is center tapped are the ac values of 0v, 15v and-15v.
The conversion of these ac values to dc values is done using the full wave rectifier unit.

Rectifier Unit
The rectifier circuit is used to convert the ac voltage into its corresponding dc voltage.
The most important and simple device used in rectifier circuit is the diode.
The simple function of the diode is to conduct when forward biased and not to conduct in reverse bias.

Regulator unit
Regulator regulates the output voltage to a specific value.
The output voltage is maintained irrespective of the fluctuations in the input dc voltage.
Whenever there are any ac voltage fluctuations, the dc voltage also changes.

Regulators used in this application are:
7805 which provides 5v dc
7812 which provides 12v dc
7912 which provides “12v dc
1---> ground pin
2---> input pin
3---> output pin
Output Filter:
This filter is fixed after the Regulator circuit to filter any of the possibly found ripples in the

output received finally. Capacitors used here are of value 10µF.


Applications
Controller controls speed of fan like ac induction motor, where unable to access motor.
In every home we use many electrical appliances switched on and off manually.
In Industries, where a large number or a group of electrical appliances are to be controlled ,this device is much

useful.
CONCLUSION
System Features:
- Easy operation
- Convenient
- Simple
- Low cost
Because of these features, the system is more useful in controlling different electrical appliances.
