INTRODUCTION

Light peak is the code name for the high speed optical cable technology

It connects electronic devices to each other

Delivers bandwidth of 10Gb/s with a potential to scale to 100Gb/s.

Light Peak
Light Peak is the code name for a new high-speed optical cable technology designed to connect electronic devices to each other. Light Peak delivers high bandwidth starting at 10Gb/s with the potential ability to scale to 100Gb/s over the next decade. At 10Gb/s, we can transfer a full-length Blu-Ray movie in less than 30 seconds. Light peak allows for smaller connectors and longer, thinner, and more flexible cables than currently possible. Light Peak also has the ability to run multiple protocols simultaneously over a single cable, enabling the technology to connect devices such as peripherals, displays, disk drives, docking stations, and more.
Existing electrical cable technology in mainstream computing devices is approaching practical limits for speed and length, due to electro-magnetic interference (EMI) and other issues. However, optical technology, used extensively in data centres and telecom communications, does not have these limitations since it transmits data using light instead of electricity. Light Peak brings this optical technology to mainstream computing and consumer electronic devices in a cost-effective manner.
Light Peak consists of a controller chip and an optical module that would be included in platforms supporting this technology. The optical module performs the conversion from electricity to light and vice versa, using miniature lasers and photo detectors. Over time, the optical components, designed to be small, easy to manufacture and affordable, are expected to enjoy the economies of scale that other components have in the computing and consumer electronics industries.

Introduction
Lig The light peak technology is a high speed optical cable technology used to connect peripheral devices to the computer via an expansion bus and using the same port. It is developed by the Intel corporation and brought to market by the Apple Inc in its upcoming version of MacBook Pros. It provide a high bandwidth and faster data transfer speed ranging from 10gb/s up to 100gb/s.
Light peak combines PCI Express and DisplayPort into a new serial data interface that can be carried over longer and less costly cables. Multiple devices can be connected simultaneously as it can support multiple protocols. Also it can be used a single universal replacement for all the current bushes.

Description:
The light peak technology is comprised of following components:
• An Optical fiber cable
• A controller
• An optical module
• A connector in each device
Optical cable: the data is transferred through the optical fiber cable which is made up of glass and it is plastic coated. It also contains copper wire to power devices which are connected to it. The optical cable is 125nm in diameter and can support data transfer up to 100 mts.
Controller: the controller chip is the main component used in Light Peak. It provides protocol switching capabilities to support multiple protocols over a single cable. It also provide priority based transfer by assigning priorities to different devices and applications used.
Optical module: the optical module convert the electrical signals into the photons which are transferred over the optical cable. The conversion is done using a special VCSEL(vertical cavity surface emitting lasers). The optical module drives two optical ports.
Connector: the connectors are located at end of the optical cable, it allow fast removal and insertion. Light peak uses the smaller ports which are suitable for the laptops.

Light Peak is Intel's code-name for a new high-speed optical cable technology designed to connect electronic devices to each other in a peripheral bus. It has the capability to deliver high bandwidth, starting at 10 Gbit/s, with the potential ability to scale to 100 Gbit/s. It is intended as a single universal replacement for current buses such as SCSI, SATA, USB, FireWire, and HDMI. In comparison to these buses, Light Peak is much faster, longer ranged, smaller, and more flexible in terms of protocol support.
Light Peak consists of a controller chip and an optical module that would be included in platforms supporting this technology. The optical module performs the conversion from electricity to light and vice versa, using miniature lasers and photo detectors. Intel is planning to supply the controller chip, and is working with other component manufacturers to deliver all the Light Peak components. We expect that the components will be ready to ship in 2011. Over time, the optical components, designed to be small, easy to manufacture and affordable, are expected to enjoy the economies of scale that other components have in the computing and consumer electronics industries.
