In the automotive context On-Board Diagnostics, or OBD refers to a vehicle's self-diagnostic and reporting capability and presents the vehicle owner or a repair technician with state of health information for various vehicle sub-systems. Earlier systems of OBD could simply illuminate a malfunction indicator light, or MIL, if a problem were detected--but the nature of the problem could not be specified.

But by the introduction of on-board vehicle computers in the early 1980's, which had made OBD possible the amount of diagnostic information available has had dramatic changes. Modern day systems gives diagnostic trouble codes, or DTCs, which allows one to rapidly identify and fix malfunctions within the vehicle and all this is possible due to the use of standardized fast digital communications port which provide abundant realtime data.

“OBD” means an on-board diagnostic system for emission control.
It is meant to:-
- detect the occurrence, types and area of a malfunction in engine.
OBD was introduced to achieve emission standards of EPA.
In India OBD I is required from 1 April 2010 (except LPG or CNG-fuelled vehicles and those >3500 kg GVW).
OBD II is required from 1 April 2013 for all categories

OBD Requirements

It should detect-
increase in the emission above threshold value.
reduction in efficiency of filter, deNOx system and catalyst.
failure of any SCR electrical component of a deNOX system.
the fuel-injection system, fuel quantity and timing actuators for circuit continuity and total functional failure.
failure of the (EGR), systems or components for monitoring and control of air mass-flow, boost pressure and inlet manifold pressure , sensors and actuators of a deNOX system, sensors and actuators.
