A QR Code is a matrix code (or two-dimensional bar code) created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994. The QR is derived from Quick Response , as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed. QR Codes are most common in Japan, and are currently the most popular type of two dimensional code in Japan.

Although initially used for tracking parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR Codes are now used for inventory management in a wide variety of industries. More recently, the inclusion of QR Code reading software on camera phones in Japan has led to a wide variety of new, consumer-oriented applications, aimed at relieving the user of the tedious task of entering data into their mobile phone. QR Codes storing addresses and URLs are becoming increasingly common in magazines and advertisements in Japan. The addition of QR Codes on business cards is also becoming common, greatly simplifying the task of entering the personal details of a new acquaintance into the address book of one s mobile ph

A QR Code system is used in combination with a QR Code printer(or QR Code creation software) and QR Code scanner. QR Code is generated with QR Code creation software and a special printer. A QR Code is a matrix code (or two-dimensional bar code) created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994. The "QR" is derived from "Quick Response", as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.

QR-code features
QR Code provides the following features compared with conventional bar codes.:

High Capacity Encoding of Data
QR Code is capable of handling several dozen to several hundred times more information than a bar code which has a maximum limit of almost 20 words. numeric and alphabetic characters, Kanji, Kana, Hiragana, symbols, binary, and control codes can be handled by the QR code.

Small Printout Size:
QR Code is capable of encoding the same amount of data in approximately one-tenth the space than conventional bar code.

Kanji and Kana Capability:
For Japanese letters, one full-width Kana or Kanji character is efficiently encoded in 13 bits

Dirt and Damage Resistant
It has error correction capability. Data can be restored even if the symbol is partially dirty or damaged.

Readable from any direction in 360°:
QR Code is capable of 360 degree (omni-directional), high speed reading

Structured Append Feature:
information stored in multiple QR Code symbols can be reconstructed as single data symbols.

Introduction

What is QR Code?
QR Code is a matrix code (or two-dimensional bar code) created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994.
The "QR" is derived from "Quick Response", as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.

How Does It Work?
Data is translated into QR Code by QR Generator.
QR Code is scanned by mobile camera phone having QR
Reader Software.
Software interprets the code.
cell phone displays the text or ask for permission to launch a
browser to display the specified web page.

BACKGROUND OF QR CODE DEVELOPMENT

In 1970,IBM developed UPC symbol consisting of 12 digits of no:
The Universal Product Code (UPC) is a linear barcode that is widely used  for tracking trade items in stores.
In 1974,Code 39 which can encode approx 30 digits of alphanumeric characters was developed
Later it led to the development of Code 128,which can encode full ASCII
In early 1980s,Multistage symbols were developed, it can encode 100 digits of characters. Egs are Code 16K and code 49.
In 1994,Multirow symbols were developed by extending multistage symbols and into matrix symbols where data were arranged in matrix.
This matrix code is QR Code, contains 7000 digits of characters at max including Kanji characters.
