Concrete is the most used construction material in the world and if correctly composed, it can be vary durable and thus save considerable society resources in maintenances cost. Self-compacting concrete is one of the subjects of concrete technology and the various investigations have been carried out and hence the concrete has been used in practical structures. In this paper, a brief introduction to self-compacting concrete (SCC) is given. And also the definition and motive for development of SCC have been discussed. The SCC has some advantages over normal concrete and also some disadvantages. An approach has been made to study the various aspects of SCC, such as types of SCC, materials used and testing methods, in detail. The paper also touches the economical considerations, applications and future development of SCC. A concrete that places itself - SELF COMPACTING CONCRETEâ„¢ A well-proportioned SCC can flow under itâ„¢s own weight through & around congested reinforcement filling forms completely & producing a void free mass with no vibration and without segregation problems. When large quantity of heavy reinforcement is to be placed in RC member it is difficult to ensure that the formworks get completely filled with concrete that is fully compacted without voids of honeycombs. This problem can now be solved with self-compacting concrete. Self-compacting concretes is placed or poured in the same was as ordinary concrete but without vibration. It is very fluid and can pass around obstructions and fill all the nooks and corners without the risk of either mortar or other ingredients of concrete separating out. At the same time there are no entrapped air or rock pockets. This type of concrete mixtures does not require any compaction & it saves time labor energy. The surface finish produced by SCC is exceptionally good and patching will not necessary. This concept of SCC was followed by a major European R & D project and implimentations. SCC has been successfully used in France, Denmark and Netherlands & UK apart from Japan. It is gaining wide acceptability because no noise pollutions there & the construction process is safer and more productive.

Self Compacting Concrete

.doc   scc.doc (Size: 276 KB / Downloads: 62)

The Concept of S.C.C
By adjusting the aggregate content and using a combination of chemical and mineral admixtures, self-compacting concrete mixes behave in a manner not normally observed in standard concrete. These admixtures, typically consisting of high-range, water-reducing (super plasticizing) and viscosity-modifying admixtures.
Without a viscosity-modifying admixture, the mixture would tend to segregate. However, the viscosity-modifying admixture enhances the viscosity of the mixture, which reduces aggregate segregation, settlement, and bleeding. The resulting mix, when properly designed, is considered to be self-compacting or self-placing.
In essence, for a concrete mix to be considered self-compacting, it should exhibit certain characteristics. The mix should flow easily and completely fill spaces between reinforcement and forms by virtue of its own weight - thus reducing dependence on vibration techniques. And the mix should also have good stability and resist separation such as aggregate settlement or bleeding.
Mixes exhibiting these qualities will significantly reduce the need for vibration or other consolidation measures. Ultimately, this may increase the quality and durability of products since problems resulting from inadequate vibration are difficult, if not impossible, to fix after the concrete has cured and hardened.

Motive for development of S.C.C
For several years beginning in 1983, the problem of the durability of concrete structures was the major topic of interest in Japan. The creation of the durable concrete structures requires adequate compaction by skilled workers. However, the gradual reduction in the number of skilled workers in Japan’s construction industry has led to a similar reduction in the quality of construction work. One solution for the achievement of durable concrete structures independent of the quality of construction work is the employment of self-compacting concrete, which can be compacted into every corner of a form work, purely by means of its own weight and without the need for vibrating compaction. The necessity of this type of concrete was proposed by Okamura in 1986. Studies to develop self compacting concrete including the fundamental study and the workability of concrete have been carried out by Ozawa and Maekawa at the University of Tokyo.
The prototype of self compacting concrete was first completed in 1988 using materials already in the market. The prototype performed satisfactorily with regard to drying and hardening shrinkage, heat of hydration, denseness after hardening and other properties. This concrete was named “Self-Compacting High-performance Concrete” by Okamura.

Composition of S.C.C
Like normal compacting concrete S.C.C contains small quantities of super plasticizer, further more in order to avoid, separation of large particles in S.C.C, additives to increase the viscosity are used. An additive to increase the viscosity is often used when casting concrete under water and for S.C.C in tunnels. To increase the viscosity in S.C.C the following fillers may be used.
• Fly ash,
• Glass filler,
• Limestone powder,
• Quartzite filler (fine sand)etc

Tests on self compacting concrete
There are three purposes for self-compactability tests relating to practical purposes.
Test (1): To check whether or not the concrete self-compactable for the structure.
Test (2): To adjust the mix proportion when self compatibility is not sufficient.
Test (3): To characterize the materials.
As test (1) so called U-flow test or box test is recommended. The U-flow test was developed by the Taisea group.
Slump flow should be 450 to 650 mm against normal pumpable concrete of 150 to 200 mm; this can be tested by motor flow test.

Mix design procedure for S.C.C

Rational mix design method

Self compatibility has largely affected by the characteristics of materials and the mix proportion. A rational mix design method for self compacting concrete using a variety of materials is necessary. Okamura and Ozawa have proposed a simple mix proportion ting system assuming general supply from ready –mixed concrete plants. The coarse and fine aggregate contents are fixed so that self compact ability can be achieved easily by adjusting the water powder ratio and super plasticizer dosage only.

1. The coarse aggregate content in the concrete is fixed at 50% of the solid volume.
2. The fine aggregate content is fixed at 40% of the mortar volume.
3. The water powder ratio in volume is assumed as 0.9 to 1.0, depending on the properties of the powder.
4. The super plasticizer dosage and the final water powder ratio are the determined so as to ensure self-compact ability.
