Touch screen Technology
touch screens are becoming more popular because they make the user interface more exciting and intuitive.There are three basic systems used in screens to recognize your touch and at the writing of this article, infrared technology is making its way as the fourth system as well as others in development for different scale products. Touchscreen The kiosks, which are installed in malls, community centers and in government buildings, are an effective method of bringing government services to the people.

Touch screen computer displays are available in three basic systems that allow the monitor to detect a personâ„¢s touch: resistive, capacitive, and surface acoustic wave.

Resistive system:
consists of a several layers that detect and register the location of the
touch.The outermost layer is a durable hard coating to protect the more delicate touch sensors and is followed by a glass plate that contains both resistive and conductive properties.This semi-flexible glass plate that is coated with a metallic layers to provide conductance and resistance, each metallic layer is separated with spacers.When the
screen is touched, the touch pushes the conductive layer against the resistive layer making and electrical contact. Voltages are then produced as the analog representation of
the position touched as the x and y coordinates.averaging
algorithm is present in the driving software to eliminate noise from contact bounce. The Personal digital assistants commonly use this technology.The capacitive system can
transmit 90% of the light while the resistive system only transmits 75%, a decrease due to metallic resistive and conductive coatings.

Capacitive system:
They also also operate through a systems of layers on the display screen.electrical charge is stored in The layering system. As a user touches the display screen, some of the charge is transferred to the user thereby decreasing the
charge on the capacitive layer.The software
calculates the position of the touch from relative differences in charge at each corner. This system system produces a clearer picture over the resistive system due to the decreased number of required layers over the actual screen.It transmits more light.

surface acoustic wave:
Surface acoustic waves are mechanical waves that propagate in
the surface materials of the glass plate. It consists of two transducers (one receiving and one
sending) which are placed along the x and y axes of the glass plate.Reflectors are also
placed on the glass plate to reflect the signal.The
receiving transducer is able to detect a touch event by the disruption of the ultrasonic
wave between the two transducers and can therefore locate the event on the x-y
coordinate plane.The system controller send a 5 MHz
signal to the transmitting transducers that convert the electrical signal into a
surface acoustic wave. the pointing device on contact,
absorbs some of the wave resulting in a change in the received signal.This change is analyzed and digitized into x-y coordinates to locate the position of touch.
system produces a perfect image and is
therefore the best for displaying detailed graphics and 100% transmission of light is possible.

TouchFLO technology
TouchFLO is an user-interface designed by HTC. It is used by dragging your finger up the screen and moving your finger left and right to access common tasks. TouchFLO was used in the HTC Touch Family of Pocket PCs and was succeeded by TouchFLO 3D. HTC is also calling this significantly

TouchFLO can be found on these phones:

TouchFLO technology discovers whether user is touching touch screen with finger or with stylus and reacts appropriately.TouchFLO makes it possible to use applications naturally by touching the screen with finger and moving the content. Apart from that it offers "grab and throw" gesture where content keeps on moving (and slows down) even after user has lifted the finger.The only main serious issue with TouchFLO is text entry, because instead of having a virtual keyboard especially designed to be used with fingers, still a classic Windows Mobile -specific virtual keyboard is used which was used for stylus, not fingers.To improve it even further one would have to add hardware support for multi-touch. This is a novel tecnology that improves user experience significantly.

TouchFLO 3D:
TouchFLO 3D consists of tabs, and the user switches between tabs by sliding his or her finger along the row of tabs at the bottom of the screen.This interface makes it easier for users to accomplish common tasks using their fingers rather than a stylus.

TOUCH SCREEN TECHNOLOGY





ABSTRACT:
A type of display screen that has a touch-sensitive transparent panel covering the screen. Instead of using a pointing device such as a mouse or light pen, you can use your finger to point directly to objects on the screen.
Although touch screens provide a natural interface for computer novices, they are unsatisfactory for most applications because the finger is such a relatively large object. It is impossible to point accurately to small areas of the screen. In addition, most users find touch screens tiring to the arms after long use.
Touch-screens are typically found on larger displays, in phones with integrated PDA features. Most are designed to work with either your finger or a special stylus. Tapping a specific point on the display will activate the virtual button or feature displayed at that location on the display. Some phones with this feature can also recognize handwriting written on the screen using a stylus, as a way to quickly input lengthy or complex information.
A touchscreen is an input device that allows users to operate a Pc by simply touching the display screen. Touch input is suitable for a wide variety of computing applications. A touchscreen can be used with most PC systems as easily as other input devices such as track balls or touch pads. History Of Touch Screen Technology:
A touch screen is a special type of visual display unit with a screen which is sensitive to pressure or touching. The screen can detect the position of the point of touch. The design of touch screens is best for inputting simple choices and the choices are programmable. The device is very user-friendly since it 'talks' with the user when the user is picking up choices on the screen.
Pen-based systems, such as the Palm Pilot® and signature capture systems, also use touch technology but are not included in this article. The essential difference is that the pressure levels are set higher for pen-based systems than for touch. Touch screens come in a wide range of options, from full colour VGA and SVGA monitors designed for highly graphic Windows® or Macintosh® applications to small monochrome displays designed for keypad replacement and enhancement.

INTRODUCTION

-> A touchscreen is an electronic visual display that can detect the presence and location of a touch within the display area.
->The touchscreen has two main attributes.
First, it enables one to interact directly with what is displayed, rather than indirectly with a pointer controlled by a mouse or touchpad.
Secondly, it lets one do so without requiring any intermediate device that would need to be held in the hand .
-> With a display of a simple smooth surface, and direct interaction without any hardware between the user and content, fewer accessories are required.

HISTORY

-> The first touch screen was a capacitive touch screen developed by American inventor G Samuel Hurst.
-> From 1979–1985, the FAIRLIGHT(and Fairlight CMI IIx) was a high-end musical sampling and re-synthesis workstation that utilized light pen technology.
-> The HP-150 from 1983 was one of the world's earliest commercial touchscreen computers.
-> The touch technology used employed infrared transmitters and receivers mounted around the bezel of its 9" Sony Cathode Ray Tube (CRT).
-> Touchscreens would not be popularly used for video games until the release of the Nintendo DS , first released on November 21, 2004.

TOUCH SENSOR

A touch screen sensor is a clear glass panel with a touch responsive surface.
The touch sensor/panel is placed over a display screen so that the responsive area of the panel covers the viewable area of the video screen.
The sensor generally hasan electrical current or signal going through it and touching the screen causes a voltage or signal
change.
This voltage change is used to determine the location of the touch to the screen.

CONTROLLER

The controller is a small PC card that connects between the touch sensor and the PC.
The controller is usually installed inside the monitor for integrated monitors or it is housed in a plastic case for external touch add-ons/overlays.
Integrated touch monitors will have an extra cable connection on the back for the touchscreen. Controllers are available that can connect to a Serial/COM port (PC) or to a USB port (PC or Macintosh).

RESISTIVE

-> A resistive touchscreen panel comprises several layers, the most important of which are two thin, transparent electrically-resistive layers separated by a thin space.
-> These layers face each other, with a thin gap between. One resistive layer is a coating on the underside of the top surface of the screen.
->Just beneath it is a similar resistive layer on top of its substrate. One layer has conductive connections along its sides, the other along top and bottom.
-> Disadvantages include the need to press down, and a risk of damage by sharp objects.
-> Resistive touchscreens also suffer from poorer contrast, due to having additional reflections from the extra layer of material placed over the screen.

CAPACITIVE

-> Capacitive touchscreen of a mobile phone.
-> A capacitive touchscreen panel consists of an insulator such as glass, coated with a transparent conductor such as indium tin oxide (ITO).
-> Unlike a resistive touchscreen, one cannot use a capacitive touchscreen through most types of electrically insulating material, such as gloves.
-> One requires a special capacitive stylus, or a special-application glove with an embroidered patch of conductive thread passing through it.
-> This disadvantage especially affects usability in consumer electronics, such as touch tablet PCs and capacitive smartphones in cold weather.
