Refrigeration systems that use environment-friendly refrigerants provide a sustainability advantage when compared to other refrigerant selections.using solar as the primary energy source is attractive prospect because of its universal availability, low environmental impact, and low or no ongoing fuel cost.three approaches that use solar energy to provide
refrigeration at temperatures below 0Ã‚Â°C (32Ã‚Â°F) are discussed below:
Vapor Compression Refrigeration
In the vapor compression cycle, cooling is provided in the
evaporator as low temperature refrigerant entering the evaporator
as a mixture of liquid and vapor at State 4 is vaporized by
thermal input from the load. The remaining equipment in the
system reclaims the refrigerant and restores it to a condition
in which it can be used again to provide cooling. The major energy input to a vapor compression refrigeration system is the mechanical power needed to drive the compressor.Two of the solar refrigeration systems considered here rely on the vapor compression refrigeration cycle in some form. The third solar refrigeration system uses thermal energy as the
primary input to the cycle. Open cycle systems that use water
as the refrigerant, such as the solar desiccant cycle, could be
used to provide cooling at temperatures above freezing
Photovoltaic Operated Refrigeration Cycle
Photovoltaics (PV) involve the direct conversion of solar
radiation to direct current (dc) electricity using semiconducting
materials. In a simple implementation one would expext, the Solar photovoltaic panels produce dc electrical power that can be used to operate a dc motor, which is coupled to the compressor of a vapor compression. to operate at high effi ciency, it is essential that the voltage
imposed on the PV array be close to the voltage that provides
maximum power.One solution to this is a maximum
power tracker can be used which, in effect, continuously
transforms the voltage required by the load to the maximum
Solar Mechanical Refrigeration
It uses a conventional vapor
compression system driven by mechanical power that is produced
with a solar-driven heat power cycle.a Rankine cycle is the best suited cycle.in this a fluid is vaporized at an elevated pressure by heat exchange with a fl uid heated by solar collectors refrigeration system.

In the present study, the heat flux received by a bubble pump, which was
simulated to a vertical tube 1 m long and with a variable diameter, was optimized. A
numerical study was carried out in order to solve balance equations concerning the
water-ammonia mixture in the up flow. The two-fluid model was used to derive the
equations. A numerical study was carried out on a heat flux between 1 and 70 kW m-2
and the liquid velocity was determined.
When we started with our project and implimentation, we were planning to utilize the
nonconventional energy resources like solar energy for domestic purposes. While
considering the power utilization of various domestic appliances, by knowing that a
major amount of power is drawn by refrigerators, we planned to make use of solar
energy to drive refrigerators which will be more economical with less wastage of
electrical power. Mostly used refrigerator systems are vapour absorption and vapour
compression of which vapour absorption system is more suitable when heat is used as
the energy input.

Solar parabolic collector is used as a principle of solar thermal heating system.
Solar thermal systems convert sunlight into heat. "Flat-plate" solar thermal collectors
produce heat at relatively low temperatures (80 to 140°F [27 to 60°C]), and are
generally used to heat air or a liquid for space and water heating or drying agricultural
products. Concentrating solar collectors produce higher temperatures.
The structure of the reflector can be divided into two parts as (a) the shell- the
supportive structure & the living area exposed to sun.
(a) The shell must be strong to withstand various environmental factors like
wind, seasons, etc., to maintain its required shape. This shape decides
efficiency of the whole system supported by selective lining.

The part of solar radiation that reaches the surface of the earth without being
scattered , absorbed or reflected is direct radiation ant it’s the most intense.the
intensity at the direct radiation reaching the surface at earth is a function of time at the

In the Electrolux refrigeration system the ammonia is used as a refrigerant. In
this system the strong ammonia solution in the generator is heated by applying
external source. Here the generator tube is heated by hot water from the solar
collector. When the heat is applied the ammonia vapourizes from the ammonium
hydroxide solution. In normal conditions or in atmospheric pressure, the ammonia
vapourizes in -330C. Here the system is in pressure of 10 bars. Then the temperature
required to vapourize the ammonia is 250C. So there will be a temperature more than
250C is required to vapourize ammonia.

BATTERY SUPPLEMENTED SOLAR REFRIGERATOR:
In this a combination of solar panels and lead batteries are used.
This fridges are expensive and require heavy lead acid batteries which deteriorate in hot climates.
In addition batteries must be replaced every three years this results in lead pollution.
Refrigerators in most parts of the world use electrical power. This saps a vast amount of energy from power plants.
Electrical refrigeration is a huge energy drainer but solar refrigeration can bring relief to the electrical grid and provide a less expensive energy alternative.
Solar power refrigeration is a great idea that has been long coming.
